I’m not gonna waste time discussing how Samsung decided to say no to updating Galaxy S, including other single core Galaxy phones to Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0, citing hardware limitations. Needless to say, fans were not pleased, resulting in a petition for Samsung to change their minds. Reeling under fan pressure, Samsung decided to release a value pack update that would try to bring some features from ICS, to keep customers happy. Soon after, a value pack firmware was leaked, which bought along a few nice features and additions.Well, after almost 3 months, Samsung has made good on their promise and finally officially released the final value pack firmware with XXJW4, based on Android 2.3.6. And for those that wanted it, Samsung have finally included TouchWiz (TW) 4, their improved TW UI that debuted with the Galaxy S2. Other additions and improvements are also pretty good, showing that Samsung actually worked hard to give users something they’ll like. Here’s a look at all the features and improvements in the firmware:Face UnlockNew Kernel with huge RAM (Total RAM: 364 MB)Galaxy S II ICS LockscreenPhoto EditorBuilt-in TouchWiz 4Improved Camera UI + Can capture pictures while shooting a videoAuto-Rotation is fast – Fast switching from portrait to landscapeOverall speed improvementsGPU Performance slightly increasedNow, without further ado, lets take a look at how you can flash the new XXJW4 value pack firmware on your Galaxy S.CompatibilityThis firmware and the guide below are compatible only and only with the Samsung Galaxy S, model number GT-i9000. Backup your Apps and important data — bookmarks, contacts, SMS, APNs (internet settings), etc. This Android backup guide would help you.If you have Samsung’s PC software Kies installed, un-install/shut it down completely from the taskbar first because it may interrupt the flashing process.Drivers! — it’s important you’ve the proper drivers installed. Good news for folks owning a Motorola Droid 3. MIUI 4, based on Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) Android 4.0 has been ported over to it, thanks to XDA modder techno-update. MIUI is famous for its unique UI, that sets it apart from all other ROMs for Android, with the option to customize it even further with extensive themes support with a lot of fan-made themes available. And with MIUI 4, it makes an already good-looking Android version like ICS even better looking. The bad news is that the port is in a very early alpha stage, so there’s quite a long list of things that don’t work for now (full list below under ROM Info). If you do try it out, be sure to report any bugs and issues you encounter to the dev, so that they can be ironed out faster.Read on to find out how you can install MIUI 4 on your Motorola Droid 3.CompatibilityThis ROM and the guide below is compatible only and only with the Verizon Motorola Droid 3. If you're hanging onto a Galaxy S II Skyrocket and wishing it had some Ice Cream Sandwich love on it, you're in luck. A new leak has now appeared and is available for download for those of you out there who are willing to give it a shot. The build date for this one is listed as March 14th, 2012 with the build.pro file confirming some form of officialness to it:ro.build.description=SGH-I727-user 4.0.3 IML74K 107 release-keys ro.build.fingerprint=samsung/SGH-I727/SGH-I727:4.0.3/IML74K/107:user/release-keys ro.build.characteristics=defaultUpdate: False alarm for the T-Mobile SGSII (T989). Look for a working method in short order, but for now fall back. For the adventurous, it is noted to also work on the T-Mobile Galaxy S II variation as well but like all things, you'll have to use caution when loading this thing up. The potential for things to go wrong is there, so keep that in mind. For the moment, Windows users only can make use of the file but hopefully that'll be sorted for Mac and Linux folks soon. Hit the source link for the download.Source: RootzWiki

HTC has been getting a lot of attention recently with their One Series of phones. Looks like the HTC One V, the budget device in the series, has gotten FCC approval and is likely getting an April release. It already got GCF certification, and FCC approval is the last step leading up to a release of a smartphone. The One V will come with a 3.7-inch 800 x 480 touch screen, single core 1 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM, 5MP camera with LED flash, and 4GB of onboard storage. In other HTC news, Sprint’s Evo Design 4G, released last October, just gained Bluetooth re-certification. Why would it need to get re-certified? Most likely it’s because it will be getting a system update soon, and the rumor mill is churning out three letters: ICS. The Evo Design 4G is a mid-range device that has been fairly popular due to its affordability. When it gets Ice Cream Sandwich, it should help extend the life of this solid device. No news on when the update will come, but with the re-certification complete, it should be relatively soon.sources: fcc, bluetooth via: androinica

The Nexus S and the Samsung Galaxy S (and its variants like the Captivate) are pretty much the same, with similar hardware except for a few differences. That’s probably the reason that ROMs ported over from the Nexus S to the Galaxy S work pretty good with a few changes. The Galaxy Note i717 was recently hacked to work on T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network, which gave developers and users over at XDA something to think about. XDA modder pwneman went ahead and took a look at the Nexus S radios and found out that the modems/radios of the AT&T Nexus S i9020A are compatible and work on the Galaxy S and the Captivate. Not only that, using the Nexus S radios provides some advantages as well. The network strength seems to improve by a noticeable margin, apparently also improving call quality. HSPA speeds also saw an increase when tested. The radios work well on the Galaxy S but on the Captivate, the 850 MHz band may not work (the radio band on which 3G works in the US and Canada), and connectivity may also be a little unstable. Also, the radios have been tested only on AOSP (MTD) based ROMs like CM7, MIUI and all the Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs, which use the radios in a different way than the stock Samsung ROMs.As you can see, using those radios can provide tangible improvements, so head on over to the Galaxy S page and the Captivate page on XDA to find out more about the procedure and to download the radio packages. Again, keep in mind that these are only for ROMs like CM7, MIUI and ICS ROMs, so don’t try them on other ROMs. Let us know in the comments about how it works out for you, and whether you see improvements on your device.
