Attached are CWM flashable 2010 & 2011 SGS modems that (for the most part) have the WCDMA 850 band within them. A I9000 based kernel (reoriented) is required for the I9000 modems to be usable on the Captivate, I am not responsible for bricking your phone if you use something else. I did some poking around with a hex editor to compare the files and was able to pull some info out:

It appears that most people are having better success with the "Aries" based modems. If you have trouble with the modems, please make sure your phone is utilizing the WCDMA 850 band and not 1900 by using the instructions below.

From the phone Dial Pad, when you enter: *#0011# you should see one of the following 3G bands:

When testing these modems please only report when connected using "WCDMA 850".

If you are on WCDMA 1900 and want to change to WCDMA 850,
1. From the phone Dial Pad, enter: *#2263#
2. From the "BAND SELECTION" menu select "[2] WCDMA BAND"
3. From the "WCDMA BAND" menu select "[5] WCDMA 850 (FDD V)"
4. Exit out of menu and check to make sure your band is now WCDMA 850 using *#0011#

Note: By default your "BAND SELECTION" is "AUTOMATIC", so if you want to revert your changes, repeat only steps 1 & 2 above, selecting "[1] AUTOMATIC" in step 2.

The quote below is from a great map showing the best modem per members actual experience for various areas of the country. It's a great resource, check it out and give your input!

From http://soggycashew.weebly.com/: After digging and digging through several threads I have come up with a list of CWM3 modem files for the Samsung Captivate. I hope this helps because I know its useful to have all the files in one place and not scattered throughout forums. I take no credit for creating these files I just have been collecting them to help myself and others and to keep them all in a general location. Enjoy and hope people make comments on what they would like to see on this site!

This rom is primarily for UK unlocked devices (BTU) but it will work in any other country code.

ROM version-JRO03H.***** XXALJL
Baseband- XXALJL
Csc-BTU I8190OXXALJ8
This is a full Uk firmware rooted.

Download the rom an odin from the provided link and unzip it .
Put your phone into “Download mode” by Shutting down your device ,the press and hold Home button+Volume-down+Power Button, once you get to the screen with a yellow triangle press “volume Up”.
Connect your device to the pc…
Open odin and select “ Pda” and browse to the location of the “rooted.tar” now press start in odin.
Flashing will take about 10 minutes.

Rom will not void your warranty nor will wipe your data, will not increase your download binary count er either.
Firmware has been tested in 2 devices, but I will not be responsible for any damage cause by it or from it. As always flash it at your own risk.

What are the advantages of flashing a rom designed for your country code/service provider?
Well for one you’re rom VERSION and CSC CODE will match therefore when there are official updates from Kies you should be able to just update.
Flashing a rom that was not made for your specific country code will work ,but you may find that your battery will drain faster, wireless performance is degraded etc ,this is because every rom made for a country id/provider also has a matching modem/baseband included, mess with that and you may find that your device will not perform as intended.
Some people may say: “I will flash any rom then just flash my country id/provider modem and that’s the problem fixed”
NO. Specific radios work specific matched (SYS)roms ( rill files) etc.
The rule is, your Baseband version should match the Build number, like so:
Baseband version-*****XXALJL
Build number- ******.*****XXALJL
Thanks to Avicohh, for all his advice and KEN for providing the devices!

Disclaimer:
If you don’t know what I’m talking about above I suggest you leave your device alone and do some research before attempting to flash it.
Firmware has been tested in 2 devices, but I will not be responsible for any damage cause by it or from it. As always flash it at your own risk.

Hi,

thanks to all the rooted ROMs here I was able to do some changes, like removing the SMS app and placing back the stock one. I am sure that something like it can be done with the phone/contacts as those APKs are around too.

What I don't know how to do is to get rid of the aweful touchwiz gray status bar, colored settings and mostly hideous 2.3-like dialogs that touchwiz uses.

I thought I just replace SystemUI.apk but that did not work at all, kept force-closing.

Can anone point me the right direction? Do I have to change the resources (png and XML) inside the systemui.apk and then repackage it? I know how to edit layout xmls since I am an app developer, but I never repackaged apks, especially when they come with OBEX classes.

Or is it not even possible without completely new ROM?

This boot.img, attached, provides a root shell directly over adb. It is a simple modification of the stock XXALJL boot.img and could be useful for ROM developers who need to adb remount frequently, while still using the stock boot/kernel. I do not recommend this method for users in general since it is very insecure (SuperUser gives you more fine-grained permission control).

Flash it with Odin or under Linux:
Code:
heimdall flash --18 XXALJL-rooted.boot.img
WARNING: contrary to the system.img root method, this WILL increase your download count!

EDIT: in fact it would be better to simply dd the img file into mmcblk0p20, should not increase the download count.
